Physical activity is good for both the physical and mental health of kids and parents as well. It’s so easy for kids to remain inactive, sitting on the couch watching TV and playing video games. However, this is fine up to some extent, during cold weather in winter, although even then it should be limited. When spring comes and brings warm sunshine and longer days, there are so many activities we can enjoy outside as a family. Regular physical activity has so many benefits for kids, including building strong muscles and bones, maintaining a healthy weight and being positive overall. Also, kids who are more active have more self-esteem and are more likely to succeed academically. For kids, it’s recommended to have around 60 minutes of activity daily.

If you lack motivation about what you can do, take a look at our list of activities you can do with your kids outside and enjoy. For instance, you can start with your own backyard and make it an adventure. Then, if you have a beach nearby, you can take the kids there, for a fun beach day. You can explore the local parks and do different activities there. Moreover, you can also go hiking on the nearby mountain. You can always play some sports outside. Another fun activity you can try with your kids is geocaching – they’ll love it. Take your kids on an adventure in the air. Or you can invent your own game that tests speed and agility. Remember that exercise is beneficial at various stages in life.

Spring Activities to Keep your Kids More Active

1.   Make your backyard an adventure

You don’t have to go far away from home to be able to enjoy fun physical activities outside. You can simply start with your backyard. There are plenty of things you can do to make it appealing for you and your kids. Think about all the things you can do in your backyard. For instance, you can build a fort, plant a garden or blow bubbles. You can also be creative and build an elf house out of stones or some other materials. A garden is a great way to engage kids in the long run and teach them some valuable things. Plan for a different activity each day after you’ve picked up kids from the child care centre – they like diversity.

2.   Take kids to the beach

If there is a beach nearby, you should definitely use it as a place to have fun with your kids. Even if it’s a bit further away, you can also go for it sometimes. There are a number of things you can do at the beach. Of course, swimming is left for summer or late spring. But, there are other things you can do. For instance, kids can build a sand fortress or you can all play beach volleyball. Remember to take a sun umbrella with you along with some food and beverages. Make a day out of it.

3.   Explore the local parks

This is probably already familiar to you – the local parks. Parks are great places to take children. There are so many things you can do there. You can play football or volleyball together. You can also play badminton, hopscotch or fly a kite. If you have a dog, you can take it with you to make it even more active as dogs are playful animals. The children can also spot different wildlife and observe nature. You can organize a scavenger hunt to keep them up and about. Make sure that you go to different parks every once in a while.

4.   Go hiking

Hiking is an engaging activity that the whole family can enjoy. Go to the local mountain and choose an easier route, if you have younger kids. In time, you can upgrade the routes. Take binoculars, magnifying glass or anything that can make it more fun. This is an ideal activity for family bonding and creating memories while breathing fresh air.

5.   Play some sports

Another thing you can do is go to a playground and play some sport, such as football, handball or basketball. You can also invite some kids from the neighbourhood. Moreover, there are other fun things you can play, such as dodge ball, hide and seek, catch, tag and others. However, you as a parent have an important role as an initiator as kids, especially young kids, need assistance and help in coming up with ideas. Later on, as they grow up, they will come up with their own ideas. It can turn into a fun hobby to help them get most of their life.

6.   Try geocaching

Geocaching is a modern outside game that includes a GPS-enabled phone or a tablet. It is an outdoor treasure hunting activity, where the aim is to find caches hidden by other people. What you need to do is navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then try to locate a geocache hidden at that specific location. You can create a free account on their website and see the geocaches near you, along with the level of difficulty.

7.   Go on an adventure in the air

If you have a bit older kids, you can find out whether there is an adventure park nearby. An adventure park usually has different objects kids need to climb on, jump from, and run under or through. They are often among the trees, in the air. Of course, each adventure is appropriate for kids of a certain age. This is so as to eliminate the chances of them getting hurt. There is also rock climbing you can try together with your kids.

8.   Invent your own game

And lastly, if there is no adventure park nearby, you can create one. Make a plan and use different objects at your disposal to make a fun game. Have kids jump over some things, climb on things, go through things, crawl under things and so on. You can do that with some logs, hoops, ropes, ladders and similar things.

Most kids like being physically active and playing some games or sports outside. Nevertheless, you as a parent should motivate and encourage them, as well as show them with your own example.
