Paint.NET

Generally, we use Photoshop to make changes in a picture. Retouching portrait photos are referred as photoshopping but there is no need to splash out on Adobe’s premium software to improve the images. GetPaint.NET is a free and easy-to-use photo editing software which is almost as capable as many full-price programs. Actually, Paint.NET was introduced as an upgrade or replacement for the Microsoft Paint. But later it evolved into a powerful editing tool with its humble beginning. It features to create your own artwork from scratches and scribblings.

GetPaint.NET offers features similar to AdobePhotoshop and GIMP. It also features layers which enable you to edit specific area of the image and you can build up an image from different sections. GetPaint.NET can be used to adjust brightness, hue, saturation, contrast, levels, curves, and many such with just a few clicks. Even there are a number of tools as in Photoshop that can be used to perform various functions on the image. If these tools are not sufficient to bring out an amazing image, you can download the GetPaint.NET extension on your device.

Features:

Paint.NET supports plug-ins like the Photoshop does. Some of these plug-ins are specially designed for retouching photos. Installing plugins is easy.

  • Download the ZIP archive
  • Extract the DLL file to Program Files > Paint.net > Effects.

Liquify is one of the best for photo retouching. It allows you to download from the Paint.NET forums. It lets you distort images by click and drag function, and you can use it to smooth out bumps, slim down noses and tighten jawlines. Keep your changes subtle, and remember that the background will also be distorted by Liquify. So, it’s better to avoid using it near any lines or regular patterns.

Paint.NET includes a level editor to adjust the contrast in your image. To increase the contrast adjusted, you have to adjust the diagonal line into S shape. This will make your image look more dramatic. The Soften Portrait tool can be used to soften the skin tones and lightens colors to obscure imperfections in your photo.

The default setting is a bit strong for retouching portrait photos. So tweak the sliders until you get the perfect result which you expect. The Vignette effect adds an Instagram-style retro camera effect that draws attention to the subject.

Airbrush Flaws:

We use the stamp tools to edit blemishes and it’s easy with it.

  • Hold Ctrl button and click a nearby area to take a sample of the color
  • Click and drag to paint over the flaw.

The stamp tool is fully configurable and can be adjusted using the options at the top of the main window like the other tools in Paint.NET. For a natural look, enable antialiasing and reduce the hardness of the brush.

When retouching portrait photos you might need to take several samples and to make sure the colors line up with the contours of the face. The clone stamp tool is also very useful for editing out flyaway hair, or specks left by dust on the camera lens.

With so many dedicated functions, filters, and user-created plugins that replicate the most popular features of premium retouching tools, Paint.NET is an essential tool for perfecting everything from selfies to wedding portraits.
