Huawei Mate 9 Review

Huawei Mate 9

Due to the failure of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, Huawei Mate 9 came into everyone’s vision. Its design sets it to be a big screen Android phone. Some of the appreciating features are its metal construction, enormous display, and long battery life.

The new Mate 9 is slightly slimmer and smarter than its previous version, Mate 8. The Operating System of this device is the new EMUI 5 software. It is the biggest overhaul to Huawei’s UI since years. It also brings with it Android 7.0 Nougat.

Alongside the vanilla 5.9-inch Mate 9 is one of the models of Mate 9. The storage of Mate 9 is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Huawei will release a limited edition Porsche Design Mate 9, with a 5.5-inch curved AMOLED display, and a capacious 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design has the same high-end internal specs as the Mate 9 Pro, the after version of Mate 9. But Mate 9 has a different aesthetic, thanks to the hands at the Porsche Design house. The specs of Note 7 may be similar to the Mate 9 but never looks. Mate 9 is no match for any of the Samsung’s phones.

The 5.9-inches display has a screen with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The pixel density of Huawei Mate 9 is 373 pixels per inch. This large sized display helps in showing images and movies very well. It lacks in full HD resolution. However, the full HD resolution supports in regular tools like Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp. The Mate 9’s screen is bright and the colors it display is rich and vibrant. Colorful games like Riptide GP look great. If you don’t bother a bit about VR then a full HD display like this will suit you just fine.

This smartphone runs on the Huawei’s latest Octa-core Kirin 960 processor which has 4GB of RAM. The new EMUI 5.0 is based on the Android 7.0 Nougat with Huawei Emotion skin. EMUI 5.0 is, for the most part, the huge improvement it needed to be. Most of Huawei’s own preloaded apps have been given a complete visual overhaul. It was overhauled with white backdrops, light gray accents, and blue highlights. Apps like the dialer, messages app, calendar and settings look more like they belong in the modern Android ecosystem, as opposed to seeming like weird.

It’s a powerful processor that is able to tackle photo editing in Adobe Photoshop Express and Snapseed. Netflix streamed without any problem. Some demanding games like Riptide GP: Renegade and Asphalt Xtreme had consistently high frame rates for smooth gameplay.

Huawei’s camera maker Leica came with a new and improved camera setup in the Mate 9.  It’s based on a dual-lens, dual-sensor setup, an RGB sensor for capturing colors, and a monochrome sensor for enhancing detail. The RGB sensor is a 12-megapixel unit behind a f/2.2 lens with OIS. And it’s backed up by a 20-megapixel black-and-white sensor, also behind a f/2.2 lens. The overall image quality of its camera setup is good.

Huawei Mate 9 has excelled in battery life with a 4,000mAh cell in its model. The phone never failed to get through a full day of usage on LTE and Wi-Fi. Often it ended up with more than 50% battery by the evening. Even with lots of photography and a little wireless connectivity, it never came close to experiencing low battery. When it comes to numbers, our usage equated to around 25 hours per charge on an average day, with between seven and eight hours of screen-on time. Of course, it can easily be killed when using LTE exclusively, especially when juggling between SIMs in areas with little cellular coverage. When traveling in areas with less reliable coverage, the screen-on time dropped to around 5 hours.
