What Should We Do to Open And View The Content Files

The given Below is a list of how to open and view the contents of a standard file for each of the main PC operating systems.

MS-DOS and Windows command line users

Microsoft Windows users

Double-click on the file which you want to open. If the file is not connected, you will receive an Open With window. If you are new with which program to use to open this file, try by using WordPad or Notepad to view the file.

In Windows when clicking a file get Open With prompt.

If the file has previously associated with a program, But you need to open it with a special program hold down the Shift key and right-click the file. In the drop-down list, select the Open With option and choose the program you want to use to open the file.Content Files Of A Computer

List files

If you want to view a list of accessible files in the present directory you can use the dir command.

Edit command

Place the file that you want to view. In below example, we will be opening the file autoexec.bat in the present directory.

Start command

Latest versions of Windows which are 64-bit no longer support the edit command. You can also use the start command for starting a file in the text editor like notepad using a command similar to the example below.

start notepad hope.txt

In the example given above, if the file “hope.txt” did not present in the current directory you are provoked to create a new file.

The start command is also used to start any file on your computer. For example, if your computer having Microsoft Word installed, and if you want to open a Word document from the command line you can use the below command.

Start hope.doc

Type command

If changing or editing the contents of the file is not significant and you only want to see the contents of the file you can also use type command.

type hope.txt

In the above example, the command would show all of the contents of the hope.txt to the file. If the file is a large file, it will scroll on until you press the pause key. For huge files, you can also duct the command to more as shown in the below example.

type hope.txt more

In the above example, the type command shows the contents one page at a time. Pressing the enter key will move forward the output one line at a time and pressing the spacebar move forward the output one page at one time.

  • Supplementary MS-DOS users can utilise the type command to show the file contents but not adjust them.

Copy con

If you are using an MS-DOS version 4.x or lower you cannot use any of the above methods but you can use copy con to create a file.

copy con hope.txt

If you enter the above command once that creates the hope.txt file.

After you are typing all the lines which you want to be in the files, press and hold CTRL + Z. After ^Z is displayed on the screen press enter to save the file.

Note: Using the copy con method is a very fundamental method of creating a file that won’t give you the capacity to edit a file, or return and fix any errors made while creating the line.
