Android Nougat
Generally, the eternal question we all face when it is time for a new version of Android is and when will I get it?
Well, sort of. We have the answer! By many different smartphone makers, Android is a fragmented mess that is customized. So finding out when exactly you will get Nougat as that depends on upon a lot of different factors.
Nevertheless, from previous updates, a lot can be learned as well as leaks and announcements. You can see this research from Computerworld for more about past update performance. Here is what we know so far. We will continually update once more details of Nougat updates that become official.
Nexus
If you like to be the first one among all to get the Android Nougat, you wisely chose by going with a Nexus device. In fact, if you are having a Nexus 6P, 5X, 6, 9, Player or Pixel C tablet then you can get the final Android Nougat developer preview right now.
Nougat may likely appear first on a pair of new Nexus phones those are probably made by HTC. Then nougat should follow shortly thereafter for the existing Nexus devices. By looking at last year we get an idea. On Oct 5, Android Marshmallow was released at the time the Nexus 6P and 5X were announced on Sept 29. So once the newest Nexus phones get shown off that means Nougat time is near.
Samsung
Samsung is the most dominant handset maker which has pulled together a string of hits this year with the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge and the forthcoming Note 7.
With the latest handset, there is some good news. The president of Samsung Electronics’ mobile communications division, A Korea Times report cites Koh Dong-jin, who committed to a Nougat update for the Note 7 in two to three months.
That would likely take longer to actually hit your mobile here in the U.S. as Samsung has to also deal with carrier approvals which tend to drag out the updates.
For Instance, In June 2016, the AT&T Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ finally received Marshmallow, a full eight months after the software’s release. On the other hand, in February, the international unlocked versions got the update.
Samsung has had more success at delivering the monthly security updates as there is less room for carrier interference. If you are having a Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ or Note 5 there is a high likelihood you will get Nougat but probably after it goes to the current flagships.
HTC
HTC was the first company to make a major commitment to Nougat. A tweet confirmed that the HTC 10 are One A9, and One M9 will get the update.
HTC is one of the better companies when it is trying to get them in a timely out to the flagships and comes to communicating about updates. So if you have one of these mobiles, stay tuned.
LG
LG is going to beat Google to the punch by releasing the first mobile with Android Nougat. The company announced the LG V20 is coming in September as a follow-up to last year’s V10. Google does not appear to mind. However, as it offers a teaser to the V20 on its new Android Nougat page.
There is more from LG on the Nougat front with G5 owners in Korea able through a new beta program, to test out the software. The good news for you is that it gives LG a large user base to try out Nougat by increasing the chances it will reach your mobile sooner.
As the company went a couple of generations back for delivering Marshmallow to the G3, the V10 should get Nougat. If you are still holding onto that one. However, there is a decent chance you won’t get Nougat as it’s outside the typical 18-month update window that a lot of carriers and manufacturers pledge.
Motorola
We saw the Moto Z outside of the hardware innovation. There isn’t much in the Lenovo acquisition that gives us confidence about rapid updates for the Z-Droid and Z-Droid Force which are the currently Verizon exclusives. That is nothing but a non-Verizon, unlocked version of the Moto Z is to come later. The company recently also declined to commit to the monthly security update cycle which isn’t great news. The software upside is pretty close to stock Android with a few add-ons but you may be in for a wait to get Nougat.

Motorola has other phones. Those are namely the Moto X Pure Edition and Moto G4 which is the latest in the budget lineup. For those, we expect to see Nougat updates so the best advice is to make a glance on the Motorola blog for announcements.
Sony
Sony provides some specific details about its own Nougat plans. The company said in a blog post that it will make Nougat available for the following Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia X, Xperia XA, Xperia XA Ultra and Xperia X Performance.
There was no timeframe provided for the updates. Though Sony did promise “new Sony features and functionality” would come along for the ride. Usually, that just means more bloatware and needless software enhancements but we will withhold judgment until we have to try and get it out for ourselves.
This is all about Android Nougat.
