Speeding up the slow shutdown in Windows 10

Hold the “Windows” button by pressing the “R” button.

Infront of you, you should have the “Run” window.

Write the following: “regedit” without the quotes in the run dialog box.

On keyboard, press the Enter button.

Note:

Left click on the “Yes” button to proceed, if you are prompted by a user account control window.

Double click on the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” folder on the left side panel.

Find and double tap to open the “SYSTEM” folder from the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”.

Find and open the “CurrentControlSet” folder within the “SYSTEM” folder.

Find and double tap to open the “Control” folder now in the “CurrentControlSet”.

Search for the “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” REG_SZ on the right side panel

Double click on it to open after you found it.

You will need to modify that from “5000” to “1000” under the Value Data field.

Note:

This value is the time in which an application shutdowns by Windows if it has not closed yet.

Left click on the “OK” button to save your changes.

Double click on the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” folder to open by going on the left side panel.

Find and open the “Control Panel” folder from the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” folder.

You should find and open the “Desktop” folder in the “Control Panel”.

You have to create 2 “REG_SZ” values on the right side panel.

Without the quotes, name one of the “HungAppTimeout”

Name the other REG_SZ as “WaitToKillAppTimeout” without the quotes.

Double tap on “HungAppTimeout” first after you successfully created them.

You can lower the time it takes for an app to shutdown in the value data field.

Note:

Remember if you drastically decrease the time for this REG_SZ file then the application might fail to save your changes properly. So if you decrease the time please remember to save your changes in the apps you are running when you shutdown the Windows 10 device.

Double click to open “WaitToKillAppTimeout”.

You have to decrease the value as well but the minimum should be “1000” ms in the value data field.

Close the Registry Editor window after you made all your changes.

Reboot your Windows 10 operating system.
