How to disable startup programs in Windows?

If you install a lot of softwares in your computer, it will take a long time to start up Windows. Many of the programs are added by themselves to the list of startup programs when the booting process is taking place and thereby increasing the numbers in the list.

How to Disable Startup Programs in Windows 7, XP or Vista

It is clever for some of the programs such as firewall and anti-virus software to be started with Windows. However, the booting process for some of the programs takes too long and so it just wastes the resources. A tool called MSConfig is installed with Windows, which allows you to simply see what is running at startup faster and disable the preferred programs you prefer to run after startup on our own as required. This tool is available and the startup programs can be disabled in Windows 7, XP and Vista.

Note that MSConfig is used to configure many things other than just startup programs, so take care of what you are doing with it. Follow the below steps in this article, if you aren’t sure about how to use it.

Go to Start menu and type “msconfig.exe” in the Search box to run MSConfig. Then the results will be displayed. When you see “msconfig.exe” is highlighted, press Enter or click on it.

Also note that if OS you are using is Windows XP, then you have to open, from the Start menu, the Run dialog box, and type “msconfig.exe” in the Open edit box, and click OK.

On the System Configuration main window, click the Startup tab. All the startup programs list will be displayed next to each other with a check box. To get rid of a program from startup with Windows, there is a need to select the check box which is next to the program that is desired so as to erase or remove the check mark in the box. If you have made your choice, then click OK.

A dialog box appears which tells you that you may restart your computer for the changes to be displayed. Click on Restart so that the computer restarts immediately. You can also click Exit without a restart if you’re not ready to restart your computer.

How to Disable Startup Programs in Windows 8 or 8.1 or 10

It really simple to disable startup applications in Windows 8, 8.1, and 10. You have to just open up Task Manager by a right-click on the Taskbar else you can use the shortcut key “CTRL + SHIFT + ESC“, then click “More Details,” when you switch to the Startup tab, and then after use the Disable button.
