Touchscreen phones know it’s you from taps and swipes

The Silent-Sense software developed by the US-based Scientists enables the touch screen Smartphone’s to identify the person who is touching the Smartphone by the unique way by their taps and swipe on the device.

The Scientists, Cheng Bo and his colleagues at the Illinois Institute of Technology have developed the Silent-Sense software, and they also demonstrated 99% accuracy in tests.

The Scientist, Cheng Bo said that the Silent-Sense software is using the phone’s built-in sensors for recording the unique patterns of position, pressure, duration and different fingertip sizes of each user when interacting with their phone or tablet.

Working of the Software:

The Scientist also said about the working of the software; the Machine learning Algorithms turns the information about the person into a signature for identifying the user, and it will lock out to the user whose usage patterns do not match.

For further enhancement, the users can enable the system accuracy by using the Smartphone’s accelerometer and gyroscope for measuring the moves of the screen when you are jabbing at it. The software also picks up the user’s unique gait when they walk while using the screen.

The research for this software was conducted with the group of 100 users, and they were told to use the Smartphone’s touchscreen as they use  normally. The software achieved the success; it was able to identify the Smartphone’s owner with 99% accuracy after no more than 10 taps.

The Silent-Sense was able to verify the user 98% of the time with an average of 2.3 touches.

The software stops the checking of Smartphone user’s identify when the apps and mobile games are being used. However, in attention to maintain the security, it will automatically switch on when email or SMS applications are accessed, said by the researchers.

  • The recent launch of Apple TouchID fingerprint recognition feature on the iPhone 5s, is an advanced technology, but still the user has to log into the device to access to access it.
  • The Silent-Sense software enables the user to log in just with a touch of their fingers.
