Fix the Webcam Freezing issue on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Windows 10 Anniversary Update has brought us with performance improvements and some cool new features to Windows 10. Along the side of all these, it also has some things broken. One of the recent new problems that popped up is the freezing issue of Webcam. If you’re on the Anniversary Update, this bug doesn’t allow you to make Skype calls.
Nevertheless, the best thing is that Microsoft had said that they won’t be releasing a permanent fix until sometime in September and it is aware of the issue. It also does impact on many enterprise customers. And that is a really serious issue as the enterprises need Skype video calls and the webcam is necessary for the Skype video calls. We think the company releases the fix soon but till then using registry editor by Rafael Rivera we have got you a temporary fix.
How-To:
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
- Enter regidit, and tap OK to open the Windows registry.
- Navigate to the following path
- Right-click on the right side of the screen, select New and click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name the new key. That is EnableFrameServerMode.
- Tap OK.
- Double tap the newly created key and make sure the Value data is 0.
- Tap OK.
- Restart your computer to complete the task.
Once if your computer is restarted start your Webcam and make a Skype call. This is only the temporary fix available for now and it works. Nevertheless, let’s hope Microsoft releases the fix fast. Until then try this workaround and let us know in the comments if it works.
Windows Central reports: The issue is caused by the Anniversary Update removing support for two video compression formats that includes MJPEG and H.264 codecs on Windows 10 and instead of opting to support YUY2 encoding. According to one member of the Microsoft’s Windows Camera team.
The decision was made to prevent performance problems due to the change on how Windows Store apps can now access the features of that camera with the Anniversary Update as the company claims.
