The default desktop icons in Windows are built into the Windows operating system. If you wish to hide the icons like My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin etc.

You can also create a new folder on your desktop to hide store desktop icons. For instance, you could separate your icons in to groups and make folders for each of the group (e.g. Documents, Games and Programs).

Windows Vista 7, 8 and 10.

Show or hide all desktop shortcut icons:

  • Press the Windows Key+D on your keyboard or find the way to the Windows desktop
  • Right-click on the desktop and hit on Personalize
  • Select View from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on Show desktop icons to toggle them on or off.
  • Again repeat these steps to reverse the process.

Hide an individual shortcut icon:

  • Press the Windows Key+D on your keyboard or find the way to the Windows desktop
  • Right-click the desktop shortcut icon you’d wish to hide.
  • Select properties from the drop-down
  • Below the General tab, locate the Attributes section.
  • Check the box next to Hidden to hide a single icon.
